Friday Focus: reorganizing the house

I didn't mention this as one of my goals early on, but 2 weeks ago I went on a hormonal rage while straightening up my house and almost threw away at least half the things we own. I talked some sense into myself and had an impromptu yard sale to help rid our house of the excess. Since then I have diligently gone through each room of the house, purged further, cleaned, organized, and taken 2 trips to goodwill. I still have to do our bedroom (it always seems to be the last thing I worry about), but it'll be done by the end of the weekend.

Oh and guess what, I didn't spend any money on new organizational items. I simply made due with what I already had- even if I really wanted to go buy stuff to organize the kids' art stuff that found a new, easier access spot.

I can now breathe easy that my house has been thoroughly cleaned in time for this baby (assuming I can keep up on the regular cleaning). And let me just add it's a good thing I did it so early on, because the 3rd trimester exhaustion has set in. I was hard pressed to do as much of the bending, lifting, and stretching in my current state of roundness and I can only imagine how a few more inches would've affected my pace.

Here are a few of my favorite new spots:
I unloaded a LOT of books- mainly cookbooks. I am still too full for these bookshelves, but this is a major improvement and I now have a good spot for all the preschool games and my sewing machine (bottom shelf, far left).

I know it looks like a mess, but art supplies aren't always easy to organize and believe it or not, everything is easy to find, use, and put back. Plus I have a good spot for the kid puzzles now!

My kitchen pantry- I won't have much cabinet space in the actual kitchen area until we do a remodel, but I was able to make the space function better for my use, by moving all the small appliances in here instead of hanging out in the kitchen. Doing so freed up a lot of space in my itty bitty poorly set-up kitchen. The cabinet holds tupperware and some of my larger kitchen basics like oatmeal and vinegar. In the corner you can't see is a work table that my kitchenaid mixer lives on and my cake stuff lives neatly under in a tote.

Check back next week to get a sneak peak at my plans for Freezer cooking next month.

Do you want to get in on the Friday Focus action? Let's all get focused and motivate each other. Tell us about it or post a link to your blog post in the comment section (don't forget to link back here so others can join in the fun too). The best part is that your focus doesn't have to be a long term thing like many of my focuses. It can be anything from setting and conquering any size goals, to what you've been thinking about recently, to look what I did- aren't I so great?
